A Maternity Session Turned into a Surprise Proposal at Maluaka Beach | Maui Photographer
One of my favorite things about photographing couples on Maui is that every session tells a different story. Sometimes it's simply about documenting a beautiful vacation. Other times, it's about capturing one of life's biggest milestones.
This session was both!
Planning the Perfect Surprise Proposal
Ron reached out to me before their trip to Maui with a unique idea. His girlfriend Hannah was pregnant, and they were already planning to celebrate this exciting chapter with a maternity photoshoot on Maui. But Ron had another surprise in mind - he wanted to propose during the session without her suspecting a thing.
We chose Maluaka Beach in Wailea for an early morning session. It's one of my favorite beaches for photography because mornings are typically quiet, peaceful, and beautifully lit. Before the session, Ron and I agreed on a secret signal.
We would begin with natural maternity photos, allowing them both to relax in front of the camera. At a certain point, I would guide them into a pose where they are holding hands and looking at each other, which would be Ron's cue to get down on one knee.
As planned, we started by capturing the excitement of their growing family. Then came the signal. Ron reached into his pocket, got down on one knee, and asked the question.
Her reaction was pure surprise, happy tears, and complete disbelief - all unfolding naturally in front of my camera. These genuine moments are exactly why I love photographing surprise proposals!
After the proposal, we took a few moments for them to simply enjoy the excitement together before continuing the session.
The result was a gallery that tells the complete story of that morning - from anticipation to surprise, and from becoming fiancés to celebrating the little one they'll soon welcome into the world.
