A Rainy Day Surprise Proposal on Maui’s North Shore | Moody Couples Photoshoot

When Abbi first reached out to book a couple’s session on Maui’s north shore, the plan was simple: a relaxed, candid shoot with her boyfriend John. They wanted something natural and non-cheesy, just capturing their time together on the island.

The day of the session brought grey skies and on-and-off rain across Maui. I suggested we might reschedule for better weather, but John and Abbi were up for the adventure. They said they didn’t mind a little rain and were happy to take the chance.

So we went for it!

We met at one of my favorite spots on the north shore - an cow pasture with beautiful ocean views. The weather was moody and beautiful in its own way. The clouds hung low over the coastline, and the light was soft and diffused. Every few minutes a light drizzle would pass through, then stop again, giving us little windows to photograph.

Despite the unpredictable weather, the session felt relaxed and fun. John and Abi were easygoing, and we focused on natural movement - walking, laughing, and just being together. The dramatic sky and dark ocean behind them created a cinematic atmosphere that actually made the photos feel even more powerful.

As the evening went on, we decided to capture a few final moments before calling it a day. That’s when John suggested a pose: he asked Abi to turn away from him and look toward the ocean.

I thought it was just another candid moment.

But then - to my surprise - John dropped down on one knee.

Even I didn’t see it coming.

Abi turned back toward him, completely shocked, and in that quiet, rainy moment on the north shore, he proposed. I quickly captured a few photos of the moment as it happened - genuine surprise, laughter, and pure happiness.

And then, within seconds the drizzle turned into a full downpour. We all started laughing and ran back toward our cars as the rain poured around us. Just before they reached the car, I grabbed one last photo of them - completely soaked, and absolutely glowing with happiness.

It was the perfect ending to a truly unforgettable session.

Sometimes the most beautiful moments happen when things don’t go according to plan. The rain, the dramatic sky, and the spontaneity of the proposal made this evening feel incredibly special and memorable.
