Maui Honeymoon: Romantic Things to Do for Couples

Maui is a perfect honeymoon destination for couples looking to combine relaxation with adventure. Whether you’re hiking through the jungle, snorkeling with colorful fish, or going on sunset boat cruise, Maui offers a great blend of romance and excitement. Here’s a little guide to some fun things to do on your Maui honeymoon—guaranteed to create memories that will last a lifetime!

1. Snorkeling

Snorkeling together side by side with your loved one is a great way to create some good memories! Maui is considered to be the best of Hawaiian Islands for snorkeling with so many great spots to choose from! My personal favorites are Honolua Bay, Black Rock, and Makena Landing. You can book a snorkeling boat tour, or simply rent some gear at any dive shop and explore on your own. Avoid full-face snorkeling masks, as they can be dangerous, and I’d also suggest skipping the cheap snorkel sets that are often uncomfortable and create unnecessary plastic waste.

Honolua Bay is our favorite snorkeling spot!

2. Sunrise or Sunset at Haleakalā

Watching the sunrise or sunset at Haleakalā is an experience you don’t want to miss, it’s just breathtaking! If you are not an early morning person, skip the sunrise and come at sunset instead - it’s equally beautiful. Of course, it's best to visit Haleakalā on a clear day rather than when it's rainy or cloudy. Be sure to bring plenty of warm clothing, as it gets chilly at the top, and remember that reservations are required for sunrise.

3. Road to Hāna

The Road to Hāna is a famous scenic drive that will take you to the charming town of Hāna. Along the way, there are endless stops to make! Some of my favorites are Twin Falls, Waiʻānapanapa State Park (“Black sand Beach”, reservation is required!), Kahanu Garden, Hamoa Beach and Pipiwai Trail. Plan for a full day, pack some snacks or get some food on the way, and enjoy the ride!

4. Boat Trip

For a romantic evening, consider booking a sunset boat cruise. Many tours offer dinner/cocktails as you sail along Maui's coastline. If you're visiting during whale season (December to April, with a peak in February-March), a whale watching tour is a must! It's such a magical experience to see whales breaching and playing up close.

5. Romantic Photo Session

Capture your love story with a romantic photo session on the beach. Choose a photographer and book a sunset/sunrise session in a beautiful location to get some memorable photos. It’s a great way to document your honeymoon and take home beautiful memories that you will cherish forever!

6. Luau

For a taste of Hawaiian culture, check out the Old Lahaina Luau. This event combines Hawaiian music, hula performances, and traditional Hawaiian food, offering a memorable experience. Such a great way to immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture and history in a romantic setting!

7. Surf Lesson

If you and your partner are feeling adventurous, try a surf lesson! Maui has great spots for beginners, and a lot of surf schools offer lessons - I recommend “Keep It Simple” and “Maui Surfer Girls”. Taking a surf lesson together is a fun way to bond and share a laugh, especially if it’s your first time.

8. Hiking

For nature lovers, Maui offers plenty of hiking trails that offer stunning views from easy coastal paths to more challenging trails leading to waterfalls and mountain views. Hiking together is a great way to explore the island and take in its natural beauty.

  • Easy walks: Kapalua Coastal Trail, Iao Valley, Twin Falls.

  • Quite a workout: Sliding Sands Trail, Waihee Ridge.

9. Beaches

Peaceful Maluaka Beach

Sometimes, the best thing to do is simply relax! Maui is home to many beautiful beaches. Some of my favorites are Kahekili, Fleming, Makena, Po’olenalena, Baldwin Beach. Pack a picnic, bring some water, mineral-based sunscreen, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere with your partner.

10. Romantic Dinner

End your day with a romantic dinner at an ocean-front restaurant! Mama’s Fish House, Merriman’s, Mala Ocean Tavern are great options for a romantic dinner. Make a reservation and enjoy a delicious meal together while soaking in the ambiance.

12. Spa Day

Treat yourselves with a relaxing couples massage at one of Maui's spas. Many resorts offer honeymoon packages that include massages, facials, and access to private spa amenities. I just have to say as a former massage therapist that Ho’omana Spa is a very special experience! It’s a perfect way to unwind and pamper yourselves after days of exploring the island.

No matter what activities you choose, the most important thing is to relax, enjoy, and savour every moment with your partner! Embrace the spirit of aloha, and let your honeymoon on Maui be an adventure filled with love, joy, and unforgettable memories!
