Why a 75-Minute Family Session Works So Well for Candid Storytelling | Maui Photographer

Maui family session that captures your story

Some family sessions are less about “getting the perfect shot” and more about simply giving space for real life to unfold.

This extended family session on Fleming Beach is a great example of what happens when we slow down and let moments happen naturally instead of trying to stage everything.

We had 9 people in total — two grandparents and two families with three little kids (including two toddlers and a baby). That alone already creates a beautiful dynamic: different generations, different energies, and a lot of natural interaction between everyone.

We worked together for 75 minutes, which is really important for this type of session.

Because with larger families, time is what allows things to feel relaxed.

Instead of rushing from pose to pose, we had space for things to happen.

Storytelling over posing

This session wasn’t focused on perfectly posed portraits. The goal was something much more alive — candid, story-driven photography that reflects real connection.

We still took a few classic group portraits where everyone looked at the camera, but those were just small pauses in between everything else.

The real story was happening in the in-between moments.

Kids lead the energy

As always with little kids, they set the rhythm of the session.

We picked up shells, ran along the shoreline, and blew soap bubbles into the wind.

The bubbles became a little game — drifting unpredictably, popping suddenly, making everyone laugh without any direction from me.

The kids also interacted a lot with each other — those spontaneous sibling moments where they’re not posing, just being themselves.

Those are always some of the most meaningful frames.

The beauty of multiple generations

One of the most special parts of this session was watching the grandparents with the kids.

No prompting, no posing — just natural interaction:

  • holding hands

  • laughing together

  • watching the kids play

  • stepping in and out of the scene organically

These are the kinds of moments that often don’t get planned, but end up becoming the most meaningful images in the gallery.

Soft light, relaxed energy

We started the session in slightly stormy, overcast weather, which created a beautifully diffused light.

Instead of harsh sun or strong shadows, everything felt soft and even — which is perfect for storytelling photography. Skin tones stay natural, and the focus shifts even more toward emotion rather than lighting conditions.

The beach itself also felt calm and spacious, which helped everyone relax into the experience.

Why 75 minutes matters

For sessions like this, 75 minutes isn’t about getting “more photos” — it’s about allowing real moments to develop.

At the beginning, everyone is still adjusting to the camera.
After a while, they forget about it completely.

That’s when the most honest moments happen.

This timing allows for:

  • natural interaction between family members

  • breaks between energy spikes (especially with toddlers)

  • time to explore different parts of the beach

  • a mix of group, individual, and candid moments

A note from the inquiry that started it all

Katy reached out saying:

“We’d love mostly candid shots and a few portraits. My daughter has this lovely wild curly hair and my son has such a sweet smile right now — we’d love to remember them at this age forever.”

That message perfectly reflects the kind of sessions I love photographing most.

Because it’s not about perfect posing — it’s about remembering a real stage of life exactly as it is.

Final thoughts

Sessions like this are a reminder that family photography works best when it feels like an experience rather than a performance.

When kids are free to play, adults are free to relax, and I’m simply there to observe and gently guide — that’s when the most meaningful images happen.

If you’re visiting Maui and want photos that feel alive, natural, and connected — not overly posed or staged — this kind of session is exactly what I offer.
